The Flight

Meeting the group was a mix of excitement and awkwardness. It turns out I do have a fellow Canadian with me, a guy named Vinnie from Montreal who seems pretty cool. I also finally met Jessie Sue and so far she is awesome. She seems to be a good mix of outgoing and easygoing. I'll let you know how the rest turn out, but I see some potential for some pretty cool people.

We all met in front of a chapel, and after a bit of a wait were let into a room that we crowded into. A guy from WorldTeach, Roger, who is Guyanese and initiated the program did most of the talking. Nothing was said that we didn't already know, however he did talk a bit about the social and political climate from an insiders perspective. He also told us to keep up on our cricket so that we could use the knowledge to gain some friends. Scott, a previous volunteer, and Nicole the program coordinator in the US were also there to get us organized and answer questions.

Check-in was kinda crazy. We haven't left North America yet and already it seems everyone is on Guyana time. I took all the waiting in a stride though and used the time to talk to my fellow volunteers. After check in Jessie, Vince, and I were starving (I hadn't eaten since about 11) so we went dowstairs for our last meal of pizza and beer on familiar soil. It was probably the only time I have ever actually enjoyed a Budweiser.

We made it on the plane just fine, they served us a dinner of bad airplane food. Drinks were complimentary though, so I had a glass of wine and took a nap.

I just woke up to my first Guyanese sunset... sorta.
